Meet the Merchants: BeaverShaver |
When I first ran across BeaverShaver.com, I smiled to myself and thought, "Geeze, you can find anything on the internet." It only made it funnier that they were headquartered in Utah. But I figured that pubic shaving is pretty popular these days, so I put a link to them on the site. BeaverShaver quickly became one of our most popular merchants. The reason, I think, is pretty clear; they run a personable site and really inform you about their products. By the time you're done reading up, you naturally feel confident in the product and in the people behind it. The personality behind the site is Dan Stephens. He displays his name prominently on the site and in my experience is accessible and good to deal with. Dan has a fun approach to pubic shaving (read his History of Pubic Hair Removal) as well as a lot of industry knowledge about these shavers that he isn't afraid to share or express an opinion on. (Check out this article.) The flagship product for the site is a small rotary shaver made by Seiko, the Cleancut. The photos on the site are a little confusing -- at least to me, the shaver looks huge. In fact, it's a little bigger around than a "C" size battery and about twice as long. (That's a good thing, since it's hard to imagine navigating a big shaver around one's nethers.) Condensing the BeaverShaver story a bit, they started out in business in late 2002 as a little retirement side-business. Since that time, they've become the leading seller of Seiko's Cleancut razor. If you've ever tried it, I don't suppose I have to say much to convince you dry shaving the pubes is a much better approach than waxing or using depilatories. It's also better (in my opinion) than using a blade because it's less likely to nick. It's also easier to keep up with maintenance. Less well known from their collection of products are a couple of high-end vibrators, one for women (the eroscillator) and one for men ( the "Ooh-la-la," -- I am not making this up, as Dave Barry says.) Along with some skin care products and T-shirts (everyone sells t-shirts but me. I think I'm missing out here.) BeaverShaver.com is the land of the guarantees. First, they guarantee that if you have the order in by 2pm Eastern time Monday through Friday they'll ship that same day or pay the shipping themselves. Second, they guarantee your satisfaction with their products. OK, for health reasons you can't return the Eroscillator once you've broken the seal on it. And I was a little surprised not to see the same disclaimer for the "Ooh-la-la" given its use. but here's what they say on their site: "We back up what we sell. We pride ourselves on our customer service. And regardless of all the mumbo-jumbo, our policy is, if you have a problem, we’ll make it right for you. Really." And that's what being a good merchant is all about. From the sales information I get, I can tell that the most popular item for people coming from ProvocativeClothing.com is a package that contains the Cleancut, a small trimmer called the "Shavi Femini Trimmer" (yes, everyone agrees it's a silly name) and a bottle of "Tend Skin" -- a lotion to help prevent ingrown hairs and razor bumps. When I mentioned to Dan that I was going to buy one of the packages to review, he offered to send me one for free. This was my first experience getting "comp'ed." Look for the review later this month. BeaverShaver is one of the few merchants on this site I never checked out personally. From the number of sales he does off our site, it seems clear that he's a pretty trustworthy merchant. Someone asked me why all the merchants I review get classed as good, trustworthy merchants. It's because as I check them out, if I find that they're not, they either come off the site or they never get on it. If you hang around this site, you might have noticed some disappear. ;-) |
OK, now here's a little social observation of mine: pubic shaving used to be somewhat rare before the internet took hold. But now, if you go by the internet alone, you'd imagine pubes just plain stopped existing in men and women both. Comparing Cleancut razor (top) with standard Braun shaver.
